To Mr. & Mrs. James Butt, in part: "Spending some weeks in this glorious city lovely weather now (after an icy start). Lots of wonderful things to see, but not very much time to do so, because I am working hard." Britten wrote "Curlew River" (a "parable for church performance") while in Venice in the winter of 1964.
